A TWO-DAY NATIONAL ORENTATION TRAINING WORKSOP ON CONSTRUCTION AND STANDARDIZATION OF RESEARCH TOOLS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES
|

BACKGROUND

A successful research always follows a systematic procedure. The sample through which the data is collected must be selected properly so that it can represent the whole population. Then the researcher has to collect data and on basis of that data, he draws conclusions and arrives at generalizations. These conclusions and generalizations would be correct and valid only if the data arc methodically collected. For collecting reliable and valid data, one needs appropriate tools and techniques. The researcher will have to develop his/her own tools or standardized ready-made tools for collecting the data.

In research tools arc means to collect relevant data and come out with desired results about the research problem. A research problem cannot be justified without the application of proper tools to collect research data. At the planning stage of a research study/project, an investigator weighs the merits of various procedures and tools of research for collecting correct evidence.

The collected evidence is called 'data' and the tools used for this, arc called 'data collecting devices' or 'tools'. These tools help to collect the right responses of a population on concerned variables and by careful analysis and interpretation of the data through the sample, the whole population is justified. In this regard construction of data collecting devices is an important and at times difficult job for the researcher.

Aresearcher may need various data gathering tools and techniques, which may vary in complexity, design, administration and interpretation. Each tool is appropriate for collection of certain kind of evidence or information. The researcher has to select from the available tools one or more that will provide the relevant data he seeks for testing the hypotheses (Koul. 1984. 119).

In order to make the research study more objective, systematic and authentic, the construction of tools and selections of the techniques for collecting data arc of prime importance in social sciences and education is no exception. It is more vital and important task for' the infant researchers in educational institutions. Due to lack of awareness and proper knowledge about research among them is the main reason for lower quality and ineffective research in the field of education.

In this background, S.L.DAV College of Education, Ambala City has planned to organize a two-day National orientation-training workshop on construction and standardization of research tools in social sciences.
